About the play:

It’s 1950, deep in the first decade of the Cold War. Couples Bob and Millie and Norma and Jim host a dinner for boss Theodore and his wife Kitty. Theodore announces that Bob, Millie, and Norma’s next ‘bold step in their service’ will be routing homosexuals out of the State Department. Problem is that “Bob and Millie” and “Norma and Jim” are actually Bob and Jim and Millie and Norma, two gay couples who have married as heterosexuals to avoid scrutiny. They are now conflicted between continuing to fly under the radar to protect themselves, and carrying out their jobs working for the government. Then everything is thrown into jeopardy when it’s discovered that an affair carried out with a college professor decades earlier was actually with another State Department employee, one who can expose them all.

Bob Martindale (M, 30s-40s):

A World War II veteran. Millie’s husband and Jim’s partner. Reserved, but good humoured and well-mannered. A man’s man.

Millie Martindale (F, 25-35):

Bob’s wife and Norma’s partner. Plays the ditzy wife in public, but really quick-witted and savvy.

Norma Baxter (F, 20s-30s):

Jim’s wife and Mille’s partner. Classy, smart, and level-headed. A secretary capable of so much more.

Jim Baxter (M, 20s-30s):

Norma’s husband and Bob’s partner. A high school teacher always ready with a comeback. Lots of energy, good with a plan.

Theodore Sunderson (M, 40s-50s):

A patriotic windbag. Bombastic and loud, and somewhat overbearing.

Kitty Sunderson (F, 40s):

Sweet and genuine, but a genuine ditz who functions on a different wavelength from everyone else.

Barbara Grant (F, 40s):

A no-nonsense, formidable opponent who knows exactly who she is.

Auditions are open to everyone regardless of background, race, gender, orientation, or ability, including those who are LGBTQ+, BIPOC, two-spirited, white, cisgendered, and disabled. Please let us know if any accessibility requirements, and we will do our best to accommodate you.
