Synopsis:
On the home front in Calgary during World War II, five women deal with loneliness, infidelity, heartbreak, and friendship as they support the troops, the Red Cross, and each other. This classic Canadian play showcases the women who stayed behind, and focuses on the effect that the war has on them, their relationships, and their families.
Character Breakdowns:
• CATHERINE (F, late 20s to early 30s): Her husband is off fighting in Europe. Practical and easygoing, works against his wishes to make ends meet. Singing ability an asset.
• JANET (F, mid to late 30s): Uptight. Thinks she’s in charge. Her husband was excluded from active duty, so she tries twice as hard to make up for it by managing every aspect of local war effort programs. Piano playing and singing ability an asset.
• MARGARET (F, mid-40s to 50s): A widow. Religious. Exhausted, with no use for Janet. Worries constantly about dying running in her family, and about her two adult sons, a sailor and a Communist. Singing ability an asset.
• EVE (F, 20s): A teacher. In love with screen star Leslie Howard, and unhappy with her much older husband. A naïve optimist who is stuck between a war that might last years and a husband eager to, but unable to fight. Throws herself into her work supporting the troops. Singing ability an asset.
• MARTA (F, late 20s-early 30s): German-Canadian seamstress. Dealing with her father’s arrest as a Nazi sympathizer and being ostracized by the community. Singing ability an asset. German accent a must.
